I am interested in understanding the genetic mechanisms and consequences of rapid adaptation in insects to changing environments. Global warming and modern agricultural practices, e.g. pesticide application, provide a driving force for adaptation. Many animals are unable to survive these pressures as humans have greatly contributed to the current extinction rate. However, some insects exhibit rapid adaptation in their changing environments. Colorado Potato Beetle, CPB, is a serious agricultural pest that has developed resistance to a wide range of insecticides, with distinct modes of action, in a short amount of time. Understanding the genetic sources driving this adaptability is essential in predicting species survival and diversity.
